Interview with Greg Potter (I can't speak for Wayne and I won't mention his dislike of the Replacments!)
1. Favorite thing about the Replacements? . My favorite
aspect of the Replacements is Westerberg's song writing talents. I think
Paul is the one of the most talented writers to come out of the 80s college
radio scene. Whether he's being ironic, witty or
sensitive, his music is always highly emotive. Combine this with a
fantastic sense of melody and you've got some of the best rock and roll
songs of the last 20 years.
2. Replacements history? I first got into the Replacements when I started working at my college radio station in the early 90s. While looking through the old record library at WGLS, I became very interested in the college radio scene of the 1980s that gave birth to such bands as REM and the Replacements. I started pulling out old alternative albums and playing them on my show. The DJ before me was on the 10 year plan at Rowan and had been on the college station since the mid-80s. He highly recommended 'Pleased To Meet Me." Right around that time, Rolling Stone put out an issue of the 100 best albums of the 1980s that included an interesting article on "Let It Be." I went out and bought both of these albums on CD and just loved them. It took me about 2 months to buy the whole catalog.
3. Why pay tribute? My main motivation for paying
tribute to the Replacements relates to my answer for the first question.
When you've listened to an album like "Pleased To Meet Me" so many times,
you forget how great it was to hear it for the first time. While we were
recording our new version of "Never Mind," it was like hearing that song
again for the first time. I was
reminded how powerful and tuneful that song really is.
