Interview with drummer, Tom O'Grady
Your favorite thing about the Replacements? The Mats were playing music while every other band was "producing" music. For me, stripped down rock-n-roll always blows away slick, ultra-produced corporate rock, pop, metal, whatever. While bands were adding countless synth tracks to their recordings and doing whatever it takes to fabricate a sound, the Mats were doing stuff like adding finger snaps (We're Comin Out). Genius! Second, Paul is just a great lyricist. A lot of times you don't know exactly what he's talking about, but you understand the basic emotion behind the song. It's a beautiful thing.
Replacements history? First hooked: I wish I were cool enough to be able to say that I was into the Mats during their heyday, but back then I was in high school and listening to whatever the radio was playing. My first taste was Dont Tell A Soul, which I purchased after hearing I'll Be You on the radio. I listened to that album on a daily basis and particularly loved Anywhere's Better Than Here, Achin and Darlin' One.
Why Pay Tribute? Who else is gonna? The most recent hypocrisy is MTV's putting Bastards of Young on their top 100 videos of all time (#98 I think). When that video was released you had to be watching MTV at 3:00 am to have a chance of seeing it!! Plus it's an "anti-video" video. If any of the Mats actually saw the MTV top 100 thing I'm sure the world now has one less TV.
