Interview with Tim Boykin
1. Your favorite thing about the Replacements? My favorite thing about the Replacements was that they rocked like hell but had great songs that stuck in your head. A rare thing if you think about it.
2. Your Replacements hostory? I had seen an ad for "Sorry Ma..." in Trouser Press, I guess around '80 or '81. It stood out kinda, they obviously weren't your average "new wave" fare. Their first album I bought was "Hootenanny," ('82?) which was a really unusual record for the time. It was eclectic, but not in a self-conscious, arty sort of way. You got the impression that they were just playing whatever they liked, which seemed brash. I was in my early teens and was involved in the hardcore punk scene, but felt constrained within it because it had become so dogmatic. So the 'Mats were a real eye-opener for me at an impressionable age. I didn't know you were allowed do that! Write cool songs and do whatever you want!
3. Why are you bothering to pay tribute to 'em? Well, you're
probably not gonna see the Lolas on a Beasty Boys tribute. For good or
ill, the 'Mats are part of my personal mythology. Mark and myself
had the dumb luck of getting to open for those guys a couple of times before
they got huge (in 80's indie terms). They were a band we identified with.
Plus, they were never afraid to be stoopid when the moment called for it
